what to order when at st anselm

I immediately liked this place when I stepped in because it doesn’t feel like a typical “steakhouse” - it’s rustic and laid back. It’s a very small restaurant, with only about 8 tables, and an open kitchen so you get to watch all the steaks being grilled. If you’re a small group, I’d recommend going early, putting your name down and then waiting at the bar next door.

What to order:

  • Butcher’s Steak angus - this is what St. Anselm is “famous” for as it’s a very well-priced high quality steak ($29). In all the reviews I read prior to going, everyone raved about it, but even knowing that, I wasn’t expecting too much as I personally find hanger steaks to be a bit tough and just not as good as a NY strip or ribeye. Low and behold it completely surpassed my expectations and was phenomenal. Like some of the best steak….I would say get this every single time.

  • Ax Handle Rib Eye - best to get when you go with a big group as they sell out of the smaller portions early in the night and then you’re looking at a 60oz steak for two people.

  • Spinach Gratin - some of the best creamed spinach I’ve had, but FYI it is extremely rich.

  • Pan-Fried Mashed Potatoes - these are really good. They have a lot of scallions in them, so if you don’t like scallions, this would not be the dish for you.

Don’t order:

  • Purple Mizuna - this was their version of a caesar. It was fine but not anything standout. There wasn’t too much flavor to it (I think it could’ve used a tiny bit more dressing as it was a little dry) but I was appreciative that it was not the typical over-dressed, very rich caesar…felt on the healthy side!

  • NY Strip Steak angus - this did not compare to the other steaks. A little chewy and not the best flavor.
