the best matzo ball soup in NYC
S&P Lunch (Flatiron) - 9.4
In my opinion, their matzo ball soup is #1 in NYC. The flavor of the broth is amazing, and the matzo ball itself has such a great consistency and taste. And, it has the perfect amount of carrots and herbs (finely chopped, which is key).
Jack’s Wife Freda (Multiple locations) - 8.8
The matzo has great flavor and consistency, and the soup has carrots and lots of dill which is important in a matzo ball soup. The taste of the broth just falls a bit short compared to S&P.
Katz’s Delicatessen (Lower East Side) - 8.3
I love Katz and think where they shine is in the meat department. The matzo ball soup is solid. I find the broth to be a bit oily though the flavor is great. The taste of the matzo balls, although good, is not as impressive as others on the list.
Sarge’s Delicatessen (Murray Hill) - 7.4
I used to think they had the best matzo ball soup in NYC, but I am convinced they recently changed their recipe, and it's not as good as it used to be. The soup is a bit oily, and they don’t add carrots or dill. The broth used to make up for that, but ever since the change, it doesn’t (sadly).
B+H Dairy (East Village) - 6.1
I have to say, this was a let down of a matzo ball soup. There was not much flavor in the broth, the matzo was a little too mushy (and also lacked flavor) and the noodles were flimsy.
